I have been favoring shrimp lately and I keep finding myself craving shrimp tacos. This time around I made some spicy shrimp with a homemade guac and cilantro lime sauce. The flavors were perfectly balanced, leaving my taste buds wanting more. There are three key components to make this recipe and I am happy to share the recipe for how I do them.


Spicy Shrimp Tacos with a Cilantro Lime Sauce

  • 1 lb Shrimp deveined 
  • 2 tsp Kosher Salt
  • 2 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Red pepper flakes
  • Flour tortillas
  • ½ Red cabbage chopped

Homemade Guacamole

  • 2 Avocados peeled, pitted and mashed
  • ½ Red onion diced
  • ¼ Cilantro chopped
  • 1 tsp Kosher salt
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 Lime juiced

Cilantro Lime Sauce

  • 1 cup Mayo
  • ½ cup Cilantro
  • 1 Lime juiced
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil


  • Deveined your shrimp and remove the shell from the shrimp.
  • Make your homemade cilantro-lime sauce by combining all the ingredients listed into a food processor. Place the sauce in the fridge until it's needed.
  • Now you can create your guac. Add all the guac ingredients into a larger mixing bowl and smash while mixing. I like mine chunky, make yours to your preference. Place it in the fridge until it's needed.
  • Get your charcoal lit with a charcoal chimney. Let it go for 10-12 mins and then dump it into your kettle grill. Add the grate and your cast iron. I am using a 12” cast iron skillet.
  • Wait 10 mins and then add avocado oil and 2 tablespoons of butter. Let it all melt together and then add the shrimp.
  • Cook the shrimp for 2 mins and then mix or flip them and cook the other side for another 2 mins. I typically go by feel for doneness.
  • Place your shrimp in a separate container or plate and pour the leftover sauce from the pan on top of the shrimps. 
  • Grill your flour tortillas for 1 min per side or until done.
  • Assemble your shrimp in this order, guac, shrimp (typically 3 per taco), red cabbage, cilantro lime sauce and top with cotija cheese.
  • Serve and enjoy the tacos!

Is shrimp healthy?

Yes! Shrimp is pretty high in protein, has healthy fats and other vitamins and minerals! In a 3oz (85 gram) serving, there are only 84 calories and 18 grams of protein!

Whether that's something you put on them or as a side, there are many options! On the tacos, you can put guacamole, elote, salsa or just plain if you like! For sides, you can't go wrong with chips and queso/ guacamole!
