Quick Look: Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad
- What it is: A creamy pasta salad loaded with grilled Cajun-seasoned chicken, crispy bacon, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, tomatoes, green onions, and homemade ranch dressing.

Why This Recipe
Grilling the chicken is what sets this pasta salad apart for me. Instead of using plain cooked or shredded chicken, I season boneless chicken thighs and grill them until they’re juicy with a little char around the edges. Crispy bacon, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and green onions add different textures without making the pasta salad feel overloaded. If you like these same chicken, bacon, and ranch flavors, my Chicken Bacon Ranch Sliders are another recipe worth trying. For another grilled chicken recipe with plenty of Cajun flavor, try my Blackened Chicken Tacos.
The homemade ranch is just as important as the chicken. Making it from scratch gives me control over the consistency and seasoning, with enough Cajun kick to cut through the richness of the bacon and cheese. As soon as the rotini is done cooking, I rinse it under cold water to stop the cooking process, cool it down quickly, and rinse away some of the surface starch so the pasta doesn’t stick together. I also reserve some of the ranch for after the pasta salad chills because the rotini absorbs dressing as it sits. Stirring that reserved ranch in right before serving keeps the pasta creamy instead of dry.
Key Ingredients

- Chicken Thighs: Boneless, skinless chicken thighs stay juicy on the grill and can handle enough heat to develop a little char around the edges without drying out. They make an excellent choice for my Grilled Chicken Tacos, too.
- Rotini Pasta: The twists and grooves catch the homemade ranch and help distribute the dressing throughout the pasta salad. Rinsing the rotini under cold water after cooking also cools it quickly and removes excess surface starch.
- Bacon: I dice the bacon before cooking and get it nice and crispy. That smoky crunch holds up well against the creamy ranch and tender pasta. It’s exactly why I do the same thing in my Chicken Bacon Ranch Quesadillas.
- Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning: This is the main seasoning for the grilled chicken and also adds a Cajun kick to the homemade ranch.
- Smoked Paprika, Garlic Powder, & Black Pepper: Round out the chicken seasoning with extra smokiness, savory. depth, and a little peppery bite.
- Monterey Cheddar: The mild, creamy Monterey Jack balances the sharper cheddar, adding rich cheese flavor without overpowering the grilled chicken or homemade ranch. Together, they complement the smoky bacon and Cajun seasoning while adding another layer of texture to every bite.
- Cherry Tomatoes: Add freshness, a little acidity, and a juicy bite that helps balance the bacon, cheese, and creamy dressing.
- Green Onions & Chives: Provide a fresh onion flavor without overpowering the ranch and give the finished pasta salad some color and brightness.
Substitutions or Additions
This pasta salad is easy to adjust depending on what you have on hand. I’d keep the grilled chicken, bacon, pasta, and ranch as the foundation, but the cheese, vegetables, and a few of the add-ins can easily be changed.
- Chicken Breast or Rotisserie Chicken: Boneless, skinless chicken breasts work well in place of thighs. I pull them from the grill around 160°F and let the carryover cooking bring them to 165°F while they rest, which helps keep the meat juicy. For an easy shortcut, use shredded or chopped rotisserie chicken. You’ll lose some of the charred flavor from grilling, but it makes this pasta salad much faster to put together.
- Different Pasta: Cavatappi, bow tie, or penne can replace the rotini. Pasta with twists, ridges, or curves gives the creamy ranch plenty of surface area to cling to.
- Cheese: Monterey cheddar is my preference, but Colby Jack, Sharp cheddar, or pepper jack can change the flavor without changing the structure of the salad.
- Add Some Heat: Fresh or pickled jalapeños work well if you want more heat. Pickled jalapeños also bring some acidity that cuts through the bacon, cheese, and creamy ranch. Another option is a little sriracha for a sharper kick, which is also how I add heat to my Garlic Parmesan Chicken Wings.
How to Make Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad (Step by Step)

- Boil the pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the rotini according to the package directions until tender. As soon as the pasta is done, drain it and immediately rinse it thoroughly under cold running water. The cold rinse stops the cooking process, cools the pasta for the pasta salad, and rinses away excess surface starch so the rotini doesn’t stick together. Drain well and set aside while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
- Season the chicken: Pat the boneless, skinless chicken thighs dry and lightly coat them with avocado oil. Season evenly with Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and black pepper. Make sure to season both sides so every piece is well coated. Let the chicken sit while you preheat the grill, giving the seasoning time to settle onto the surface before cooking. For recipes where crispy skin matters, I use a longer 2-hour air-chill with my Pellet Smoked Chicken Wings.

- Crisp the bacon: Add the diced bacon to a skillet or griddle over medium heat and cook until browned and crispy, stirring occasionally so it cooks evenly. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain off the excess grease. Getting the bacon crisp here is important because it helps the pieces hold their texture once they’re tossed with the pasta and creamy ranch.
- Grill the chicken: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat, around 425-450°F, and place the seasoned chicken thighs directly on the grates. Grill for about 5-7 minutes per side, flipping once, until the outside develops deep browning and a little char around the edges. Continue cooking until the thickest part reaches 175-185°F internally. Remove the chicken from the grill and rest for 5-10 minutes, then chop it into bite-sized pieces for the pasta salad. That smoky, charred chicken works especially well with bacon and ranch, which is why I use the same idea in my Chicken Bacon Ranch Loaded Queso.

- Make the Homemade Ranch: Add the mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, fresh dill, chives, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper to a bowl. Whisk everything together until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust the consistency with a little more buttermilk if needed. Set some of the ranch aside before assembling the pasta salad so you can stir it in after chilling if the rotini absorbs too much dressing.
- Assemble the pasta salad: Add the cooled rotini, chopped grilled chicken, crispy bacon, Monterey cheddar, cherry tomatoes, green onions, and chives to a large bowl. Pour in the homemade ranch and gently toss until everything is evenly coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes so the pasta salad gets cold and the flavors have time to come together. Before serving, give everything another toss and add some of the reserved ranch as needed to bring back that creamy texture. Serve chilled and finish with extra bacon, chives, or green onions on top.
James’ Grill Master Pro Tips

Rinse the Pasta Right Away: Once the pasta is al dente, drain it and rinse it under cold water. This stops the cooking process and cools the pasta quickly so it doesn’t turn soft or sticky.
Don’t Overcook the Pasta: Pull the pasta while it still has a little bite. It will soften slightly as it sits in the ranch dressing, so starting with mushy pasta will only get worse after chilling.
Grill the Chicken Hot: I like grilling the chicken around 425-450°F. That gives the outside good color and char while keeping the inside juicy.
Let Everything Cool Before Adding the Ranch: Don’t mix hot chicken, bacon, or pasta into the homemade ranch. Let the ingredients cool first so the dressing stays thick and creamy.
Save Some Ranch for Serving: Pasta absorbs dressing while it chills. Hold back a little homemade ranch and toss it in right before serving if the pasta salad needs to be loosened up.
Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad FAQs
Yes. You can make it several hours ahead and keep it covered in the refrigerator. The pasta will absorb some of the ranch as it sits, so I like to reserve a little dressing and toss it in right before serving to bring back the creamy texture.
Absolutely. Grilled chicken is my first choice because it adds fresh grilled flavor, but chopped or shredded rotisserie chicken is a great shortcut when you’re short on time.
Don’t add all of the ranch at once. Reserve some of the dressing in the refrigerator and mix it into the pasta salad just before serving. This is especially helpful if you make the recipe several hours ahead or overnight.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Because it contains cooked chicken, bacon, cheese, and a creamy ranch dressing, keep the pasta salad refrigerated until you’re ready to serve it.

Notes
- Don’t overcook the pasta. Cook the rotini just until al dente, then rinse it immediately under cold water to stop the cooking process. Drain it well before assembling.
- Rotisserie chicken works as a shortcut. Grilled chicken thighs give this pasta salad more flavor, but chopped or shredded rotisserie chicken can be substituted when you’re short on time.
- Keep the bacon crisp. Let the cooked bacon cool completely before adding it to the salad so it holds its texture better in the ranch.
- Save a little ranch. The pasta will absorb dressing as it chills. Reserve some homemade ranch and toss it in before serving if the salad needs to be loosened up.
